On May 19, Symantec announced the launch of Norton Save & Resote (NSR), an official statement saying that it can not only provide comprehensive protection of Symantec-winning Norton ghost software, but also can be saved in a new and faster way. Precious family souvenirs and other important documents provide consumers with a highly intuitive automatic backup and recovery solution that protects consumers’ digital properties of greatest concern.

Figure 1 Product packaging luxurious atmosphere, it is easy to put it down

From Norton's strong technical guarantees and good reputation in the broad user base, this NSR is very much worth looking forward to! So what does it look like? How is the overall performance? What are the highlights compared to ghost? On May 21st, we received a trial version of NSR from symantec. The author conducted a comprehensive evaluation.

First, install and run

Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive and double-click 'NSR100CS.exe' to enter the installation screen.

Click Next, accept the terms of the license agreement, and click 'Next' to start the installation. Everything can be by default (of course you can choose the installation path). When the 'Driver Verification Window' appears, it is better to select 'Verify Driver' to verify the installed drivers on the current machine so that the software can work better. As shown in Figure 2:

figure 2

After the verification is completed, the verification result will appear as shown in Figure 3:

image 3

This result shows that the 'cat' driver on the author's machine has not passed the verification, but this does not affect the use, ignore it and close it. After closing the verification result window, the installation is completed quickly and restarted.

After the machine restarts, start the program and the Welcome screen appears. Click Next and request to enter the product key (note that the machine should be connected to the Internet at this time). Since the author used a trial version, click on 'Buy Later'.

After the installation is complete, the program starts LiveUpdate and searches for updates for installed products and components. Figure 4:

Figure 4

In this case, keep the network of the machine unblocked and click 'Start' to download and install it.

When the download and installation are all completed, restart the program again to keep the program up-to-date.

After restarting, we started the software. You can start this test trip!

Figure 5

The program interface is clean and neat, and it is very easy to use.

The software's requirements for the operating environment are relatively high. Therefore, strict detection of the operating environment can ensure that the program runs more stably. The installation process requires two restarts, which is a bit cumbersome. However, we can only expect Microsoft’s Vista to "stay in" its own machine to improve the compatibility of operating systems and software.

PS: To uninstall the software, just double-click 'NSR100CS.exe' again.

Second, the system resources occupied

The basic operating environment requirement of NSR is '256MB' memory and '384MB or more is recommended.' This is relatively high compared to most software. However, looking at the process in Task Manager, this requirement is not an exaggeration.

The process in the red box in Figure 6 is the process of NSR

From the above figure, it can be seen that there are 6 processes when the NSR does not work after startup, occupying a total of about 53MB of physical memory, and the CPU usage rate is 0. This kind of memory consumption for 256MB memory configuration users, NSR can be considered a 'eat' memory. However, the author 512MB memory configuration, the machine can run other types of software at the same time, so the memory configuration of 348MB and above, may be more suitable for the operation of this software, but also in the PC configuration high-speed development, the memory capacity of 1G today, this Point memory usage may not be a problem at all.

As the saying goes: Why don't you dare to take porcelain work without diamonds? When we used memory, it was the diamond drill that NSR asked us to provide. As for how it "works", we will wait and see.

PS: The CPU usage of the NSR will definitely increase. This will be tested later.

Third, backup

NSR inherits ghost partition backup and hard disk copy functions, and adds a new folder and file backup. Below we enter the test.

1, backup partition

Do not restart the machine, do not enter the DOS environment, run the software in the windows environment, in the program's main interface, click 'Norton Save and Reston' - 'backup' - 'immediate backup', a pop-up 'easily set' window, Pictured:

Figure 7

By default, the software will use the system partition and "My Documents" as backup objects, which is very human! You can also choose the path where the image file is stored. Click OK to place the two backup tasks in the backup list and start the backup at any time. As shown in Figure 8:

Figure 8

You can also select the backup target by clicking on the 'Customize' button in the 'Easy Setup' window. Here, we still select the system partition (C partition) as the backup object. In the subsequent settings, everything can be set by default, but You can choose the compression ratio yourself, this time we will choose 'high' for 'compression'. As shown in Figure 9:

Figure 9

Once set, run this task in the list in the Backup Now window to back up the C partition.

In the backup, we can look at the resource occupancy, as shown in Figure 10:

Figure 10

The physical memory footprint rose to about 57MB, only 4MB more; the CPU usage rate was 77%. When the Ghost backup was used by the machine of the author, the CPU would report an alarm. NSR is much stronger than ghost!

Let's look at the compression ratio of the image file:

Figure 11

The author C partition has used space 1.35G, and the compressed image file is only 606MB! OK, very satisfied!

Immediately afterwards, the author also backs up the C partition in the case of "compression" to "standard" and "none." The list of three backups is compared as follows:

From the above table, it can be seen that when "compression" is selected as "none", the image file is not compressed, the CPU usage is minimum, but the physical memory is the largest; when "compression" is selected as "high", the image file compression ratio is 50%. It takes the longest time, the CPU takes up the most, but the physical nengbao memory takes up the least; when the "compression" is selected as "standard", the image file size and resource occupancy are centered, and the time is similar to when the "compression" is "none". In the specific application process, you need to look at the user's specific needs and make a choice (this software is recommended to compress the 'standard').

In contrast, after Ghost chose the highest compression rate, the backup image file still had more than 700 MB, and it was necessary to enter DOS, which inevitably dwarfed the "Veteran" ghost member.

In addition, click 'Edit Backup Schedule' to realize automatic backup. The edit window is shown in Figure 12:

Figure 12

Figure 13

Prev 12345Next

Through this editor, you can select regular backups, or trigger backup events based on conditions such as the newly installed program, user login and logout, and data added to the hard disk, making the entire backup process more intelligent and automated. In addition to the first backup, future backups use incremental backups to maximize space and save time.

2, backup files and folders

NSR provides all the powerful features of ghost technology, while using a faster way to back up files, which is a major new feature of the software.

You can back up selected files and folders by selecting 'Back up only selected files and folders' in the 'Define backup wizard'. The default backup file type already covers most of the files we need to back up on a daily basis. As shown in Figure 14:

Figure 14

Of course, we can also add other extensions by 'add file type' to backup some kind of added files. If you want to back up specific folders, you can back up a folder by adding a folder. If you want to back up specific files, you can select them with 'Add Files' (hold down the Ctrl key to make multiple selections).

In this way, a simple step can back up everything on your computer, including digital photos, home videos, major financial records, important computer system files, and other data, making it extremely quick and easy to use.

PS: The backup of files and folders can not choose 'compression', but after the author's comparison after backup, it seems that the default 'compression' is 'high'.

3, free backup other media

NSR can back up almost any media, including external storage devices such as CDR/RW and DVD+-R/RW drives, usb backup system, Click On this website, and FireWire@ (IEEE 1394), and Iomega Zip@ and Jaz@ drives. For the medium it can back up, I think it is very unique, which saves a lot of time for users.

No need to restart, work in Windows environment, intelligent backup, free backup of folders and files, so many humanized designs, so that users with 'DOS phobia' are excited, but also we do not need to be tired of their own love machine , and devoted to enjoying the e-life of the IT era.

Fourth, recovery

As long as you use NSR to make a backup, even if you can't restart the operating system, just use the CD to start, you can easily and easily recover.

Because the author's trial version cannot be started on the CD-ROM, and the new functions of the software are files and folder backups, the recovery of the folder is used as an example for testing. However, we can browse through the backup partition's image file through NSR:

Click 'Norton Save and Reston' in the main interface of the program - 'Restore' - 'Restore the computer'. In the 'Restore the Computer' interface, we select an image file, click 'Browse' in the 'Task' menu, and then Click 'OK' to view the image file as a partition in Windows Explorer! Figure 15:

Figure 15

The partition in the upper left corner of the 'Login (D:)' partition is the partition on the hard disk, and the 'Logistics (I:) in the lower right corner is the file created when the NSR views the image file, and the partition 'I' is automatically assigned. '.

Click on the image file shortcut, we can see all the files in the image file, and the D partition is exactly the same, and even all the files in the image file can also be copied and deleted. Pictured:

If this image file is shared, is it convenient and practical for users who need open sharing and allow modification and fear that their love machine has been completely modified by others?

Well, here's what's going on, we're going into the folder's recovery test.

On the main interface of the program, click 'Norton Save and Reston' - 'Restore' - 'Restore File' to restore the folders and files that have been backed up.

Click 'Restore File' and the 'Restore File' window appears, as shown in Figure 16:

Figure 16

In the 'Find Files to Restore' form in this window, we can enter the name of the backed up folder and let the program find it on its own. If you click 'Search' directly, all backed up files and folders will be listed. Click on 'Advanced Search' to search by a variety of criteria. As shown in Figure 17:

Figure 17

In this test, I backed up a folder called 'Kart Rider', enter 'Kart Rider' in this form, click 'Search', the following list box will show the backup images that meet the conditions file.

Figure 18

The author originally backed up the "My Documents\\Running Kart\\Kart" folder, so we clicked on the "<"My Documents folder>\\Kart Kart" directory, the list box This will display all the files that have been backed up in this directory. As shown in Figure 19:

Figure 19

You can click on one of the files, or hold down the 'Ctrl' key to select more, then click the 'Restore File' button. A dialog box appears. We are free to choose the destination path for the restore. As shown in Figure 20:

Figure 20

After selecting the path, click on 'Restore' and the selected file will soon be restored to the specified location. Two words: Convenient!

Backing up and restoring specific folders and files is a leap compared to ghost. With this leap, we can eliminate the complicated manual backup steps such as compression, copying, searching, copying, and decompressing of traditional manual backups. With one click, important data can be backed up and restored!

V. Protection Center Console

Norton Protection Center console integration provides an easy-to-use interface for managing Norton Security applications. When Norton Internet Security 2006 issues a notification about a virus or worm outbreak, the outbreak alert trigger automatically starts the backup.

Click Norton Protection Cente on the main program interface to enter the Norton Protection Center console. As shown in Figure 21:

Figure 21

From this console, you can view security information such as 'Security Basics', 'Email and Instant Messaging'.

Click on 'Security Basics' to view it, as shown in Figure 22:

Figure 22

The basic security information on this machine is displayed in the window, which helps us to better understand the security situation of the love machine. If it is used with Norton's other security products, it will better play its role. For example, if Norton Internet Security is installed, a notification will be issued in the event of a virus or worm outbreak, and NSR will automatically start the backup.

The Norton Save and Restore Master integrates with the Norton Protection Center console, so we can manage Norton Security applications with an easy-to-use interface. All Norton 2006 products can be linked through this central console. In this case, you can combine NIS2006 together!

Evaluation summary

On the whole, NSR is a very good software. Although the individual functions of the beta are not open, the results I have tested so far are quite satisfactory.

Personal feelings in the operation of the software under Windows, compared with ghost's DOS operating mode, can better suit our users' psychology and habits, especially the interface operation mode makes use more convenient.

In particular, new functions such as backup and restore of folders and files, Norton console integration, and virus outbreak alert triggers are personally considered to be worthy of the reputation of symantect and Norton, and even more satisfying to the expectations of users. Here, we hope that symantec can continue to make Norton give us more exciting!
